THIS ARTICLE HAS BEEN UPDATED - A previous version of this article indicated that Medupi power station will be in full operation by June 2015. The article has been updated to reflect that Medupi as a whole is expected to be running at full load in 2020, with only Unit 6 expected to produce the full 800MW of power by the end of June 2015. The article below has been updated to reflect the corrections. Fin24 apologises for any misunderstanding.
Cape Town - Eskom has taken steps to improve the maintenance of its power stations and barring any unexpected delays Medupi’s first unit, unit six, “is due” to provide full power to the grid by the middle of the year, Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa told MPs in the national council of provinces on Wednesday.
Ramaphosa also said that the government was looking to the private sector to provide 3 000MW of gas-fired power – a new idea since last week when he announced that a request for proposals had been made for proposals from the private sector for a new “coal-fired” power station of 2 500MW.
