Load shedding is shameful, says DA

Cape Town - Eskom’s chief executive officer Tshediso Matona’s remarks that load-shedding was preferable to a blackout on Monday “inspires no confidence”, the official opposition said.

Matona, addressing a media briefing at Megawatt Park, said: “It really pains us to have to load shed.”

While the power monopoly had to choose between the lesser of two evils - “a complete blackout will be ... catastrophic” - the entity had opted to load shed at weekends rather than in the working week, he said.

DA public enterprises spokeswoman Natasha Michael, said the “basic take away from the briefing” at Megawatt Park was that the power outages “are here and here to stay... and that there is not much to be done”.

Michael said: “The current situation at Eskom is damaging to our economy and South African families who have to structure their daily lives around Eskom’s load shedding schedule. It is simply shocking that President Jacob Zuma and Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown are missing in action while the country’s economy is in turmoil.”

The DA would be handing over a list of demands on Tuesday to the Department of Public Enterprises on the load shedding crisis, said Michael.

“Load shedding is jeopardising countless jobs and it cannot be tolerated this casually. It is just shameful that South Africans are now expected to deal with load shedding as if it were unforeseen and inevitable. The ANC government, through mismanagement and failure to plan ahead, have brought us to this point.”
