Limpopo wants treasury out - report

2012-11-11 13:33

Johannesburg - Limpopo premier Cassel Mathale wants the treasury, which took over administration of five provincial departments, out of the province, the Sunday Times reports.

Mathale said it was time the intervention came to an end as it had achieved its objectives.

"We have made tremendous progress. Depending on how national [government] interprets things, they will have to review their presence," Mathale was quoted as saying.

In December 2011, the treasury took over administration of the departments of health, education, roads and transport, public works, and treasury. This came after the province asked for a R1.77bn overdraft from national treasury. Since then the province had gone from having a R1.7bn overdraft to a R2bn surplus.

Treasury said the decision to withdraw from the province could only be made by the Cabinet and the National Council of Provinces.

The improved financial position had not been achieved because of delays in the payment of suppliers, treasury spokesperson Jabulani Sikhakhane said.

"The value of outstanding payments has declined from R1.2bn when intervention began, to R250m currently.

"The reduction in the level of expenditure has occurred mainly as a result of reducing waste and irregular payments and has therefore not been at the expense of the delivery of services in the province."

No, Cassel you silly billy. The treasury should stay because the figures prove they are clearly doing a much better job of managing those departments than was the case before. You don't want your province going back into a 1.7bn overdraft at the taxpayer's expense now do you? Hmmmmm?

I know someone asked why the Premier is still in his post. I also want to know what happened to the MEC's and the HOD's and other officers involved who are to blame for the total incompetent running of the province. One needs to merely track back a little and remember the number of shady tenders granted, etc. Wasted expenditure? The ANC needs not only take over the administration but also carefully assess the ppl in position - from Executive Mayors to Mayors, from Premiers to MEC's, from the Pres to the Cabinet Ministers. We do not have a system where the ppl vote for these individuals - the party itself appoints them. Do yourselves a favour and have a look at the shambles in the Buffalo City and Nelson Mandela Metro's! It is a disgrace!! The reports showing blatant corruption and other failures have NO impact on the perpetrators, and they continue to serve in high ranking ANC positions. I know it's nothing new, but somewhere someone has to wake up and see the light and realise it is actually a train!!

Why is there a R2bn surplus? Are they telling us that everyone in Limpopo is fed and housed and educated and there is nothing to spend R2bn on? Pay your R250mil debt and help your people instead of storing it to be stolen when the intervention ends!
