AMCU's deregistration halted following meeting with labour department

The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union will not be deregistered, the office of the Labour Relations Registrar has said.

In April the department of labour issued a notice of intention to deregister the trade union due to non-compliance with its constitution, arguing it was not a genuine trade union.

On Monday the Registrar of Labour Relations, Lehlohonolo Molefe, officially reversed course to say the biggest union on the platinum belt would not be deregistered.

“Having considered further representations by AMCU which include supporting documents, the registrar has taken a decision not to continue with the deregistration of AMCU,” said Molefe in a short statement.

The union is scheduled to hold its national congress between September 18 and 20.
