Zim govt workers to strike over pay woes

Harare - The Civil Service Apex Council, a labour group representing Zimbabwean government workers, has called a strike starting on Tuesday after the state failed to pay salaries on time.

“Our valued membership will not be able to report to duty,” it said in a statement sent to its members and handed to Bloomberg. “All civil servants must heed this call, no one will be victimised, our demands will be met.”

The strike comes after Harare, the capital, was hit by riots on Monday as taxi operators protested against what they said was police harassment. Zimbabwe’s main border post with South Africa was shut last weekend after the government banned the import of certain goods, sparking protests from traders.

The finance ministry announced last month that it would delay pay for government workers including the military.

“We’re encouraged by the response to our strike call and many teachers have heeded the call,” John Mulilo, secretary general of the Zimbabwe Teachers Association, said in an interview.
