Cape Town - The Public Servants Association (PSA) is adamant that civil society should join the boycott against the Sun Met, as Markus Jooste's horses will still be part of the race.
Following a meeting with Steinhoff’s [JSE:SNH] attorneys on Friday, where financial records and documents dating back to 2002 were handed over to the PSA and the Federation of Unions of South Africa (Fedusa), PSA general manager Ivan Fredericks reiterated previous calls to boycott the horse race, scheduled for January 27.
"Next Saturday we are calling on people to boycott the event, especially those who feel for South Africa - those that feel for their grandparents on pension and those going on pension. That money belongs to the people who earned it and (is) not to be utilised by caviar-eating and expensive champagne-drinking directors and CEOs,” said Fredericks.
Earlier on Friday, deputy general manager Tahir Maepa said that Sun International [JSE:SUI] and the Racing Association SA had refused the union’s request to prevent Jooste’s horses from participating in the event.
"Even though he (Jooste) has relinquished his colours, his horses are still running through associates and friends... We believe Sun International in particular cannot want to be associated with such an individual after what has happened."
