02 Sep 2015

That wraps up our live update for the day.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: We have not had a national minimum wage - we have had sectoral agreements.

Yes ANC is going to deliver on the issue of the national minimum wage. It is going to show leadership.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: Everyone would have to monitor the application of such a minimum wage. At the same time it is the people most affected who will then have the tools to ensure Government takes action against those who do not apply the minimum wage.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: During the process of going through research and engaging with international experts, one of the recurring messages were that the minimum wage works well if there is commitment on all sides, and enforcement.

02 Sep 2015

EFF member to Ramaphosa: Is it possible for the Government to show that it will protect the poorest of the poor.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: Universities and other research institutions will also come forward with proposals. Clear in our mind that we have to move forward with speed so we can report back to the President.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: We have taken the trouble to make sure that when we reach a national minimum wage, we have looked at various situations all over the world.

We will be meeting shortly again to see progress made at technical task team.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: Some of the issues requiring further discussion is the scope of national minimum wage and other forms of wage setting like sectoral wage settings.

Mechanisms for determining a national minimum wage and the actual level of the minimum wage is being investigated.

Work involved in introducing minimum wage is quite complex I have found out and it is also multi-faceted and requires careful deliberation.

This work has to be concluded without delay though.

We have had workshops on the matter with experts from Brazil, Uganda, Germany, the UK and Australia. We have been putting together a lot of empirical data.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa says progress is being made within the National Economic Development and Labour Council (NEDLAC) on the minimum wage and the committee has received a progress report.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: The leaders in the region are highly experienced and very mature and they have vision and all that it takes to make sure there is stability in the region.

SA never chose itself - it was asked to play this role.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa asked: Why do you remain the best person to mediate in Lesotho? Is this a case of the ANC and you yourself imposing yourself politically in Lesotho?

Ramaphosa: All these allegations are not true and a figment of someone's imagination.

SA never imposes itself on any country in the world. I would like to believe that one did the best one could.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: People of Lesotho yearn for lasting stability in their country which they realise is needed for growth in their country.

We shall be helping them to reach peace and stability.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: During my visit to Lesotho in July, the Kingdom expressed their appreciation for the SADC assistance.

Still much to be done to achieve long term stability in Lesotho.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: My office always tries to see what is the best route to travel to the next destination.

In this regard the Defence Force looked for a plane and found there was no plane that could take us to the destination.

So they chartered a flight. They did not know who the plane belonged to.

The information of the ownership of the chartered plane only became known later. In the end this is the truth and the reality.

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Wednesday that his attempts to improve the efficiency of South Africa's state-owned entities (SOEs) are not an attempt to get more votes in the 2016 Local Government Elections.

He was updating the National Council of Provinces on his plans to improve the efficiency of key state-owned entities (SOEs) such as South African Airways (SAA), Eskom and the South African Post Office (Sapo).

Ramaphosa: We have nothing to hide. As the Minister of Defence outlined the circumstances around which we undertook to Japan, there was nothing much more than that.

02 Sep 2015

Question to Ramaphosa: On the trip to Japan, why did you use the Gupta jet and not one of SA's own jets?

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: I will call on all of us, when you travel abroad, promote SA Inc. Demonstrate your patriotism, show that you love this country so much and you want it to win.

Show the best side of SA and try to attract investments to SA. Tell the true story about our country - the very best story of our country.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: When we embark on international trips our main purpose is to promote our country.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: If you are found wrong footed you will be put to shame.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: Roll up your sleeves like many of us have had to do - work hard day and night. There is still time to redeem yourself. Remove those unwarranted qualifications from your CV.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: We call on those who still participate in this terrible behaviour to stop. Remove those fake qualifications from your CVs immediately and embark on a process of study.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: The call we make to especially young people in SA is that one gets qualifications only through hard work. We must be a country that promotes the values of integrity and honesty and people must stop fraud.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: We will have measures that will end up that those people misrepresenting their qualifications being reported to the National Prosecuting Authority.

We are preparing a list of those who used fake qualifications so that they can be named and shamed and be criminally charged and jailed.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: We urge all public and private entities to make every effort to verify qualifications of directors and to report any fraudulent activities.

We call on members of the public to ensure the do not jeopardise their employment prospects.

When it comes to qualification, you either have it or not. If you do not have it, go and study and get your qualification.

We have got to stop being a country of people who misrepresent what they are qualified in.

Let us be properly educated people. If you are not educated, don't claim it. Have it or don't have it.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: The minister has already requested the establishment of a national registry to list the names of those who have misrepresented their qualifications.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa to answer question on people faking or lying about qualifications...

Ramaphosa: Government has indeed investigated reports of incidents of people faking their qualifications. Minister of Higher Education and Training is preparing a presentation to address this problem.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: I am asked how much did the ANC budget to instigate violent farm worker protests in the Western Cape. The answer is we do not to things like that. Full stop.

02 Sep 2015

Question to Ramaphosa: What amount has been budgeted to fuel unrest among farm workers in the upcoming election.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: At the same time we must ensure food security and a thriving agricultural sector.

The NDP propositions create a balance for the agricultural sector to empower our people to become very involved in agriculture themselves.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: There is work on a pilot process regarding the proposal of workers owning 50% of the land they work on. A proposal is being worked on. We are not standing still. We are working on various measures.

We are confident that land reform trajectory we have chosen is one with good balance.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: The ANC Government has committed itself to a land reform approach - it is one that is working and that is implemented as we speak.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: There is a legislative framework to deal with farm evictions. It has put the breaks on wide scale evictions of our people from farms.

02 Sep 2015

EFF: Does Government have a legislative framework to deal with these farm evictions - done predominantly done by white farm owners to black farm workers. As the EFF we are saying we can vote for you if you change the Constitution to say the land can be expropriated.

02 Sep 2015

EFF member: There have been massive evictions of farm workers from farms. What about the protection of those who stole the land?

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: We can all learn from each other. And hopefully the Western Cape can also learn from other provinces, especially about how to treat farm workers and about race relations. Let the Western Cape come and learn.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: If the Western Cape has done something very well, we would like them to come to this forum and outline what they have done - like other provinces have done.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: I have been involved in a process where we bring our provinces together to see how they can learn from each other.

We found a number of provinces all have something to offer as lessons to each other.

It would be a good thing if the Western Cape takes part in the next round that the Deputy President's office will convene.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: Government has to look at processes unfolding throughout the country. We look at what is happening in each of our provinces and we always try to take the best examples and apply them.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: I have in the past called on farmers to desist from evicting farm workers. We continue to monitor this.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: Agriculture is vital to the future of our country. And the NDP has found it to be one of the key drivers to grow economy growing forward.

...Important to ensure food security for our people. We want the agricultural sector to realise its full potential.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: Government is leading the process of changing SA's agriculture sector.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: We keep hearing reports that some farmers are seeking to restrict the freedom of association of their workers.

This should not be allowed in a democratic South Africa.

It is an offense to prevent any party candidate from gaining reasonable access to workers.

We hear reports of some farmers preventing their workers from being accessed by candidates standing for election.

We want to call on those farm owners to stop this.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: The rights and needs of farmworkers and labour market regulations are important in the approach.

There are initiatives in place to build capacity and provide support to farm workers and vulnerable communities.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: Those found with their fingers in the cookie jar must face consequences.

02 Sep 2015

Ramaphosa: Corruption is pervasive - it is a social and economic aspect we need to deal with.

It is in the public, private and even in political parties and NGOs. All of us have a duty not to tolerate corruption.
