Gauteng plans bicycle transport routes

Johannesburg - The Gauteng roads and transport department intends to roll out non-motorised transport infrastructure in the province.

The infrastructure would integrate all municipalities' non-motorised transport networks, said spokesperson Octavia Mamabolo in a statement on Monday.

The Gauteng transport commission was recommending the use of non-motorised transport to reduce congestion and create cleaner, sustainable cities and a healthier population.

Mamabolo said the infrastructure would also include shared road usage for cyclists and pedestrians in the design and maintenance of road projects.

"The department aims to distribute 3 000 bicycles towards pupil transport and create 5km of cycle lanes in Vosloorus and 10km in Kaalfontein."

She said pupils would get to school safely and in reduced time.

Mamabolo said the creation of pedestrian and cycling networks would also promote social integration among residents.
