Cape Town - Western Cape bread distributors have turned to the Constitutional Court in a last attempt to institute a class action case against Pioneer Foods Group [JSE:PFG], Tiger Brands [JSE:TBS] and Premier Foods, Business Day reported on Wednesday.
The matter relates to the Competition Tribunal fining the three bread companies for their involvement in bread price fixing.
The Constitutional Court heard arguments from bread distributors seeking to pursue claims for damages after suffering financial losses as a result of cartel activity in 2006.
The news agency reported that bread distributor Imraahn Mukaddam said he and about 100 others suffered reduced profits.
Representatives for the companies dismissed the grounds for a class action.
The court reserved judgment, however if granted in favour of the bread distributors then it could become one of the country’s biggest class action cases.
