Bloemfontein - Investments worth millions might be lost in the Free State agricultural and tourism sectors after a panga attack on a farmer, Die Volksblad reported on Wednesday.
United States farming company SBH Farms chairperson Dr Stephan Rogers said it was not possible to work "like this" on the farm, the newspaper reported.
Rogers' brother Alan, 61, and his girlfriend were attacked on the farm Geluk, near Ladybrand, this week. Rogers said their ability to make a difference was increasingly hindered by crime.
Rogers represented a group of investors from the US and elsewhere who had taken a chance by investing in South Africa, Die Volksblad reported.
"We invested for the long term in the tourism and agricultural sector and brought in millions of dollars investment to create work in the eastern Free State," Rogers told the newspaper.
"Thefts occur weekly and even more regularly. Our lives are in danger. It is not possible to work like this."
Alan Rogers, who suffered lacerations and stab wounds, was in a stable condition in the Bloemfontein Mediclinic on Wednesday.
The attackers tied up his girlfriend, but did not harm her.
