UPDATE: No load shedding for Thursday

Eskom has not had to implement load shedding on Thursday.

At 20:55 the power utility thanked customers for using electricity sparingly during the peak evening period.

Earlier in the day the power utility said that there was a heightened probability of rotational load shedding during the evening peak between 17:00 and 21:00 due to increases in electricity demand.

There was no load shedding on Tuesday or Wednesday.

In other Eskom-related news, wage talks between employees and the power utility on Thursday remained unresolved. Negotiations are set to continue next week Wednesday, as negotiators for the power utility first have to consult with Eskom's board on union demands.

The three unions at the power utility – The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) and Solidarity – are presenting a united front for the relaunched negotiations.

In a joint statement after Thursday's round of negotiations ended, NUM, Numsa and Solidarity criticised Eskom for "playing games".

"[On Thursday] the Eskom management informed us that it does not have a mandate to respond to our core demands because it must first consult the board of Eskom," the statement said.

Deputy Eskom spokesperson Dikatso Mothae, meanwhile, told Fin24 on Thursday afternoon that negotiators would go back to the utility's leadership to present the union demands.

"... until the negotiations continue, there isn’t much that can be said on the matter," she said.
