Eskom announced stage 1 rotational load shedding on Thursday, which will be implemented from 12:00 until 22:00.
The power utility said in a statement the load shedding was due to one of its plants being out for planned maintenance and increased plant outages.
"Stage 1 rotational load shedding requires 1000 MW to be loadshed nationwide. Load shedding is conducted as a measure of last resort to protect the power system from a total collapse or blackout," Eskom said.
It urged customers to check their load shedding schedules on the Eskom website (http://loadshedding.eskom.co.za) or on municipal websites.
Eskom can also be contacted on its Customer Contact Centre at 0860 037 566."We encourage residents and businesses to please use electricity sparingly to ease the demand. Please switch off geysers as well as all non-essential lighting and electricity appliances to assist in reducing demand."
