UPDATE: Risk of load shedding on Monday still high

No load shedding is required for Monday, Eskom spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe tweeted.

Over the weekend Eskom had warned that there was high probability of Stage 2 load shedding due to increased break downs at power stations.

But on Monday morning Phasiwe tweeted that some generating units have come back online due to maintenance.

"No load shedding will be required today as some generating units have been brought back on stream from maintenance, in addition to the topping-up of diesel tanks and water reservoirs for pumped storage stations.

"The System Operator has warned though, that the power system remains vulnerable and that the current status might be reviewed should the grid become constrained due to plant breakdowns," he added.

Eskom later issued a statement indicating that the risk of load shedding remains. "The electricity system remains tight and the risk of load shedding still remains high for today should power station units fail to return as planned." the statement read.

Eskom has urged consumers to use electricity sparingly.
