Eskom all ready to claw back – board

Cape Town - The Eskom board has looked closely at the build programme, including Kusile and Medupi power stations, and has identified that the big task ahead is recovery and claw-back, said board member Pat Naidoo.

Naidoo, chairperson of the recovery and build committee of the power monopoly, told MPs at a hearing on the troubles of Eskom that the board had met on Monday with top executives to study the much-delayed build programme.

"We looked closely at Medupi and Kusile... [and] the executives responded to our call to have a discussion,” said Naidoo.

“We understand the history [of the problem of the build programme]," said Naidoo. “Now the focus had to fall on how we claw back... [and] how can we enhance the productivity going forward.

“Let us lock down at this point."

Without explaining further, he said board directors and executive directors looked at the "time, cost and quality" of the build programme.

"I am comfortable that at least we have this on the table. Our big task is recovery and claw-back."

Earlier, acting CEO Brian Molefe said while Eskom had 38 000 workers in the organisation, the build programme was being hit by labour dissent at Medupi and Kusile as a result of workers that were contracted by private sector companies.

Molefe said MPs had asked the same question in a variety of ways: What are the intended results of the build programme?

"This was asked several times and phrased differently,” he said. “I was privileged to sit in a meeting on Monday where Pat Naidoo [presided], where he was hauling executives over the coals over the build programme... and what was being done there."
