Johannesburg - Chilly weather was expected to cause high power usage in households on Monday, said electricity supplier Eskom.
"Households are urged to use electricity efficiently and to switch off geysers, pool pumps and all non-essential lighting and appliances between 17:00 and 21:00," the power utility said in its bi-weekly status bulletin.
Eskom re-iterated its call for consumers to try to save 10% of their usual electricity usage.
"This will make it significantly easier to manage the power system during this challenging time, while also enabling us to do planned maintenance to ensure the reliability of our plant."
The capacity available to meet Monday evening's peak was 33 986MW. This was expected to cover the forecast demand of around 33 834MW.
Planned maintenance stood at 4 711MW, while unplanned power cuts were at 49 16MW.
On Sunday, the peak demand was 30 622MW, with available capacity of 33 285MW.
Peak demand for the week was forecast at 33 564MW on Tuesday, 33 444MW on Wednesday, 33 450MW on Thursday, 31 458MW on Friday, 30 968MW on Saturday and 30 889MW on Sunday.
