Cape Town - Struggling power utility Eskom said on Friday that 6 000 MW out of its 42 000 MW generating capacity is at risk of breakdown due to a maintenance backlog.
EWN reported that there is a high risk of load shedding this weekend and the Eskom media desk confirmed to Fin24 that the system is tight this week.
"Any expected event can trigger load shedding," the supplier said.
Eskom's Acting chief executive Brian Molefe said, however, that almost daily nationwide rolling power cuts were temporary and not systemic.
On Friday Eskom shifted from stage one to stage two load shedding at 08:20 and notified that it would continue till 22:00.
"This is due to a further shortage of generating capacity and increased electricity demand," Eskom said.
