E-tolls is not Sanral's top challenge

Cape Town - The SA National Roads Agency's (Sanral) major challenge is having insufficient resources, according to Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe on Tuesday.

He also pointed out that Sanral is working on resolving problems relating to e-tolls.

Motlanthe was speaking at the opening of Sanral's central operations centre, which is aimed at improving the safety of motorists and reducing the impact of accidents.

He said an inadequate road system is a key constraint to economic growth.

"Transport is the backbone of the South African economy".

Sanral is tasked with building and maintaining national roads with money from the fiscus and funds from the user-pay principle, said Motlanthe.

"Sanral's major challenge is insufficient resources for timely upgrades and maintenance of our road network."

He also said that the government is aware of e-toll challenges, but that Sanral is doing everything to resolve these problems.

Motlanthe also thanked motorists and businesses who have purchased the 1.2 million e-tags.

However, last week the Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance said e-tag penetration has been dismaland questioned Sanral's revenue calculations.

Last week the agency denied that it could be facing cash-flow problemsafter recovering less than a 10th of more than R500m in overdue e-toll bills.
