Cape Town - The Dutch Consulate in Cape Town has announced a R4.5m investment in Cape Town World Design Capital 2014.
The Dutch Consulate's Department of Design project will be a three-week long programme of workshops, presentations, speakers and events that seek to address sustainability challenges in South Africa.
World Design Capital 2014 addresses sustainability issues through a creative lens.
To the Dutch Consulate General this is an opportunity for the Netherlands to make a lasting contribution to South Africa using Dutch strengths in design thinking and innovation.
The result of the Department of Design project will be matchmaking and collaborations between South African and Dutch organisations in the areas of water management, transport and logistics, agriculture and farming, health and science and creative industries to co-create South Africa through design thinking and innovation.
Department of Design will be held from July 8 to 28 at 8 Vrede Street in the Cape Town CBD.
It will be designed as a space where visitors can engage in the programme and interact with each other through a café, access to free, WiFi and workspaces and a crèche featuring educational toys designed by partners in the project.
The Department of Design programme is currently being developed. The Dutch Consulate General is engaging in round table discussions with South African and Dutch experts to co-create a programme that addresses the most relevant issues facing South Africans where Dutch expertise can be shared.
The Netherlands is South Africa’s third largest EU-trading partner. It is also the largest importer of goods from the Western Cape and the second largest investor in that area after the UK.
