Domestic worker summit to be held

Johannesburg - The labour department will hold a summit for domestic workers, it said on Tuesday.

The event, to take place at the Khayelitsha Stadium, Cape Town, on Saturday, would seek to educate workers of their rights under the Basic Conditions of Employment, Labour Relations, and Unemployment Insurance Acts, the department said in a statement.

"We have heard the cries of our mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers. We realise that domestic workers are particularly vulnerable to all sort of abuses," Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant was quoted as saying in the statement.

She hoped it would be the first of many to be hosted around the country.

"In our engagements, this is an area that was identified as lacking and therefore we are responding to the need as identified by the workers themselves."

She was currently attending the International Labour Organisation (ILO) summit, in Geneva Switzerland, where she took part in discussions highlighting poor working conditions of domestic workers worldwide.

"The ILO says many of them are also subject to deplorable working conditions, labour exploitation and human rights abuses. But there are signs that this is changing."

Oliphant was expected to brief the Khayelitsha summit on her Geneva trip.
