Cape Town - Cosatu and the City of Cape Town appeared before the Equality Court on Tuesday to address the concerns of Cosatu that the City was unfairly discriminating against poorer areas regarding the roll-out of the MyCiTi buses.
The Cosatu representatives said they maintained their view that poorer communities needed public services more urgently than wealthier communities and said that the Khayelitsha / Mitchell’s Plain area should get bus routes before Milnerton.
Cosatu said it wanted three things:
- The City must use the buses available in the city as well as those operated by Golden Arrow to complement the existing bus service to overcome the shortcomings in those areas;
- The City must fast-track the building of bus stations in Mitchell’s Plain and Khayelitsha and
- The City must introduce a payment system that must facilitate payment in cash on the bus, for people who are unable to recharge a ticket due to proximity issues.
