Govt will not bow to Cosatu over NDP

Cape Town - The Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) is not a government alliance partner and has no right to insist on scrapping the National Development Plan, Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane said on Thursday.

"The government is not in alliance with Cosatu. It is in alliance with the ANC," he told journalists at Parliament following Cabinet's regular Wednesday fortnightly meeting.

This meant any conflict that arose over the plan would be between the ruling party and Cosatu, and would not involve government, Chabane said.

Cosatu has voiced opposition to the NDP, while organised business and opposition parties have called for the immediate implementation of the 30-year growth plan.

Chabane suggested government would not bow to pressure from Cosatu, as government departments and agencies were ready to implement the NDP.

The practical implementation of the plan would become clear when departments and agencies included the NDP objectives in their strategic plans next year.

On Wednesday, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan said the NDP was central to the government's allocation of resources over the next three years.
