Cape Town - Most South Africans were caught off-guard by a sudden dose of load shedding, which was caused after a coal silo collapsed at Eskom's Majuba power station in Mpumalanga on Sunday.

Matriculants studying for their final exams were the most affected, but Eskom CEO Tshediso Matona said: "Eskom has also informed all key stakeholders, including the Department of Education and the national disaster management centre, to minimise the impact for matriculants and all communities."
Fin24 user Lara Williams said her son was studying for his finals when their load shedding hit from 18:30 to 22:00. "Every night my son won't be able to study or have dinner so his focus has been ruined," she said. "What happened to the new stations that were meant to be built from 2008, the reason we had to fund the loans initially?
"Are they trying to prove a point that nuclear is the way to go and coal is not stable?"
