Cabinet gives nod to state newspaper

Cape Town - The cabinet has approved the government's new communications strategy, spokesperson Jimmy Manyi said on Thursday.

Briefing the media following the executive's regular Wednesday meeting, he said among a range of platforms the Vukuzenzele magazine would be transformed into a monthly tabloid.

Social media platforms would also form part of the communication channels.

"Approval of the strategy will also see a return to government's centralised approach to media buying," Manyi said.

The government communications and information system (GCIS) would procure media space and airtime for national departments to realise economies of scale.

Government, through GCIS, would monitor and enforce adherence to the "government brand".

Non-cabinet weeks would, among others, be used for media briefings to communicate progress on the implementation of government's programme of action.

"The implementation of the strategy will result in a much more informed and empowered public," Manyi said.
