Johannesburg - Motorists will have to fork out more at the pumps for petrol as the energy department announces another price hike, but the price of diesel is coming down.
The price of 95-octane petrol will increase by 7.0 cents a litre (c/l) and 93-octane will go up 5.0c/l from next Wednesday, the department said.
Consumers will now pay R14.39/l and R13.98/l for 95-octane in Gauteng and the coast respectively.
There is some relief for motorists using diesel.
Diesel with a sulphur content of 0.05% would decrease by 8.8c/l and that with a sulphur content of 0.005% by 7.8c/l.
Wholesale illuminating paraffin will decrease 34.5c/l and SMNRP illuminating paraffin by 49c/l
Liquefied Petroleum Gas will decrease by 22 cents a kilogram.
“The decrease in the price of illuminating paraffin and LPG will benefit households that use these products, especially as winter approaches”, Minister of Energy Dikobe Ben Martins said in the statement.
April will also see inland motorists paying 3.0c/l less on the pump price of fuel.
Martins said scrapping this levy due to the commissioning of the multiproduct pipeline has had a positive effect on the latest fuel price adjustments.
"This is consistent with government’s programme to build new infrastructure that benefits South Africans”.
Ahead if the announcement economists told Fin24 that they expect an increase of between 3 and 8 cents.
Last month the price of all grades of petrol increased by 36 cents, while diesel went up by 27 and 28c/l.
