ANCYL welcomes Zuma's take on economy

Johannesburg - The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) has welcomed the ANC's vision for transforming the economy, spokesperson Floyd Shivambu said on Monday.

"The ANC Youth League has been saying that political power without economic power is meaningless and we are glad that the ANC accepts this analysis as a basis to transform our economy," Shivambu said in a statement commenting on President Jacob Zuma's January 8 statement.

The league also welcomed the "gradual introduction of free education for the poor until undergraduate level", and the scrapping of fees for students at Further Education and Training Colleges unable to pay.

"We welcome these interventions and hope that other measures will be introduced to ensure that free education is provided until undergraduate level for all academically deserving, yet poor students at all levels."

The ANCYL was also pleased that poor women would be provided with sanitary towels.

"The practicalisation (sic) of this request is a sign that the ANC deeply cares about the wellbeing of the people of South Africa, in particular poor females."

Shivambu said the league was generally happy with the content of Zuma's address at the party's 99th anniversary celebration in Polokwane on Saturday.

"The acknowledgements and commitments of January 8 Statement are a great inspiration to the ANC Youth League because they confirm the reality that the ANCYL is critical body of opinion in the ANC, which is listened to."
