A Fin24 user is concerned that there is too little being done to educate consumers on debt. She writes:
I was over-indebted and even went for debt counselling. By God's grace I got another job and used my pension fund to pay my debts off because my debt counsellor left his profession.
I managed to pay all of them off but I have one remaining debt at FNB, which I am currently paying off.
I don’t know how I am going to get the debt counselling status removed from my profile because I don’t have a debt counsellor, but that's another day's worries. My first priority is to pay off the FNB loan.
On the FNB account I've noticed that they overcharged the interest and they had to credit that account with approximately R4 000, thanks to the ombudsman.
People don’t know their rights, they just pay because they are clueless. They don’t check their statements, they don’t check the balance and compare it to what they pay.
Even if there are different amounts on the statement people should query it. There is too little being done to educate consumers.
