Tiger Brands reopens meat processing plant after listeriosis outbreak

Tiger Brands is re-opening a meat products processing facility that was closed following a major listeriosis outbreak, it said in a statement on Friday.

The listeriosis outbreak in South Africa was first noted in October last year, when the NICD discovered an increase in listeria throughout South Africa, with more than 365 documented cases.

In a statement issued on Friday, Tiger Brands said rigorous assessments of the factory had been completed, and the Ekurhuleni Department of Health issued a Certificate of Acceptability to the Company for the Germiston processing facility.

"This endorses the factory’s standards and operating procedures for the safe production of food products," Tiger Brands said.

Production of ready-to-cook products, comprising bacon and frozen sausages as well as salami, would start on Friday 12 October.

"While such certification can only be awarded by local authorities, the process was supported by the National Department of Health. The Clayville abattoir will supply the raw material requirements for the Germiston facility as well as fresh meat cuts. In addition, it will continue to contract slaughter on behalf of approved pig suppliers."

The Enterprise meat canning operation, which is a separate unit on the Polokwane site, re-commenced production on 12 September 2018. A Certificate of Acceptability for this operation was issued by the Capricorn Municipality on 31 August 2018, Tiger Brands said.

Structural refurbishments continue on the remaining units at the Polokwane facility and are  expected to be completed by early November 2018, after which the Department of Health will conduct its assessments.
