SABC heads into negotiations with unions over looming retrenchments

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) says it remains committed to complying with all the legislative requirements and processes relating to retrenchments.

The cash-strapped broadcaster recently announced almost 1000 employees would be affected as well as an additional 1200 freelancers.

The corporation said it met with organised labour as planned on Tuesday.

"We had the first consultation meeting in relation to the contemplated Section 189 process, under the auspices of the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) in terms of the applicable regulations," SABC spokesperson Neo Momodu said.

"The meeting was constructive wherein the SABC provided requested information to organised labour ... The parties committed to continue with the consultation in a CCMA facilitated meeting, scheduled for 12 and 13 December 2018", she added.

The SABC board appeared before parliament's communications committee on Tuesday, where it said it was facing its own day zero in that it would soon not be able to pay staff their salaries.

The SABC has stated it would like negotiations with unions to be concluded by January 2019, so that retrenchment notices can be served from February.

The unions at the same time, have given management until Friday in a written memorandum, to find alternative ways to find funding and avert retrenchments. It says that if the SABC fails to do so, its members would stage a strike.
