SA tourism income increases

Cape Town - Total income for the tourist accommodation industry increased by 8.4% in October 2015 compared with October 2014 as measured in nominal terms, Statistics SA said on Monday.

Income from accommodation increased by 7.1% year-on-year in October 2015, the result of a 3.9% decrease in the number of stay unit nights sold and an 11.4% increase in the average income per stay unit night sold.

In October 2015, the types of accommodation that recorded the highest year-on-year growth rates in income from accommodation were guest-houses and guest-farms (12%) and "other" accommodation (9.4%).

The main contributors to the 7.1% year-on-year increase in income from accommodation in October 2015 were hotels (contributing 3.6 percentage points) and "other" accommodation (contributing 2.7 percentage points).

Income from accommodation increased by 7.4% in the three months ended October 2015 compared with the three months ended October 2014. The main contributors to this increase were hotels (5.7%) and "other" accommodation (9.4%).

In October the Tourism Business Index of the Tourism Business Council of South Africa (TBCSA) showed that insufficient overseas leisure demand was the greatest negative contributing factor to business performance for both the accommodation sector and other tourism businesses.

Input costs were also regarded by the business tourism industry as a big negative contributing factor.
