SAA boss makes Iata breakthrough

Singapore - The CEO of South African Airways, Siza Mzimela, has been appointed a member of the International Air Transport Association’s (Iata's) board of directors.

Mzimela is the first woman to be appointed to the board in 67 years.

Iata made the announcement on Tuesday in Singapore, where the association is holding its annual meeting of industry heads. The body represents 230 of the world’s biggest airlines, which between them constitute 93% of global air travel.

Minister of Tourism Marthinus van Schalkwyk praised Mzimela's appointment and said it was pleasing to see some winds of change blowing through Iata. He said he was very pleased with the appointment.

“Siza is doing such a fantastic job at SAA and it is being noticed in the industry as well. There can be no doubt that she was appointed on merit and her appointment is a matter to be celebrated in South Africa.”

Mzimela said the appointment was a high honour bestowed on her by the industry.

“I think the appointment is important, not only for SAA but also for Africa as a whole because it provides us now with an opportunity to also provide some input to the industry on the things that are important regarding our continent.”

She said a huge challenge remained how to get more female representation in the industry. She will serve on the board for an initial period of two years.
