Johannesburg - Limpopo Gambling Board CEO and SA Responsible Gambling Foundation director Serobi Maja has been appointed president of the International Association of Gambling Regulators (IAGR).
He is the first African to hold the position.
Maja was elected to the executive committee of the US-based IAGR in 2005, and served until 2007 when he was elected deputy president.
The IAGR is a forum for gaming regulators to discuss policy issues.
During his one-year term of office Maja will be responsible for developing common norms and standards in licensing and regulations of the gambling industry.
He will focus on steps to guard against unlawful gambling activities and the dumping of bad international gambling practices in developing economies. South Africa is the host for the 2011 IAGR Conference.
