Durban - The multi-billion King Shaka International Airport in La Mercy north of Durban is under-utilised, a government official said on Thursday.
“The Dube Trade Port which incorporates the King Shaka International is under-utilised at the moment,” said provincial cooperative governance head of department Frikkie Brooks.
He was presenting the provincial growth and development strategy for KwaZulu-Natal during a symposium for newly elected municipal leaders at Durban's Inkosi Albert Luthuli ICC.
The Dube Trade Port was not only about the passenger transport as it also created capacity for freight, he said.
“The agricultural produce component of the Dube Trade is not doing well. It is only a fraction that we use. That is because we are not producing enough to export to other countries,” he said.
He said there was a need for the agricultural sector to start producing more and to export.
