FlySafair gets operating licence - report

Johannesburg - FlySafair has been granted a licence to operate domestic flights, The New Age reported on Thursday.

"This sends a clear message that FlySafair is here for the long run," FlySafair CEO Dave Andrew was quoted as saying.

"We are eager to provide South Africans with an alternate low-cost airline that is dedicated to offering competitive and sustainable fares between Johannesburg and Cape Town."

Dates for the launch and ticket sales are yet to be announced.

The airline was initially blocked from starting its operation after two competitors brought an application to interdict it, based on it not meeting the 75% domestic ownership requirements.

Since then, FlySafair had restructured its shareholding, giving South African employees a 25.14% stake in the company, the newspaper reported.
