Comair flies to Maputo

Maputo - Aviation company Comair [JSE:COM] plans to open a route from Johannesburg to Maputo early in 2011, a spokesperson said Thursday.

"We anticipate that it will launch in the first part of this year," said Stuart Cochrane, Comair executive manager for network development.

"We've been reviewing the opportunities to Maputo for some time now."

Flights would be from Lanseria airport to Maputo international airport.

Comair still had to decide whether the flights would operate under British Airways, or low-cost airline Kulula, but prices would be competitive, Cochrane told Sapa.

The number of flights per week also still had to be finalised.

Roughly 70% of traffic between Johannesburg and Maputo was South African business, prompting the airline to tailor the offering for this group, he said.

Many expatriates living in Mozambique also came to Johannesburg over weekends or to connect to international flights from the city, he said.

Low-cost airline 1time Holdings [JSE:1TM] last year started flying from OR Tambo International Airport to Maputo, stealing clientele from the pricier SAA, SA Airlink and Mozambican national carrier LAM.
