Cape Town - Hotel Verde in Cape Town has been awarded the Internorga Trendsetter Award at a ceremony in Hamburg on Thursday.
This annual award goes to a company that demonstrates innovation, courage and passion for how business practices and sustainable management can work together for optimal results.
The criteria included the use of sustainable technologies, raw materials from ecological production and fair trade, transparency in manufacturing and outstanding socially responsible actions.
Hotel Verde competed against over 100 contenders from hotels, restaurants, caterers, institutional caterers to bakeries worldwide.
Hotel Verde owner, Mario Delicio said the significance of the Trendsetter Award is that it exemplifies what the hotel stands for.
"We have always said that we may hold the title of Africa’s greenest hotel, but we hope that won’t be for long," he said.
"Hotel Verde is strategically placed to play a key role in the future of green building and sustainability in South Africa and the world. We want to show the continent what can be done and we want to challenge the industry as a whole.”
Some of the sustainable features at the hotel include renewable products in design and procurement, wind turbines, photovoltaic roof panels, energy generating gym equipment, regenerative elevators, grey water recycling to feed toilets and subsoil drainage and water harvesting.
