Cape Town - Julie-May Ellingson has been appointed as the new CEO of the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC).
The process to find a new CEO for the CTICC started shortly after Toefy announced his resignation in April 2014. Ellingson is expected to step into her new role in the next few months.
Ellingson has extensive experience in construction, a thorough understanding of the complexities of municipal government legislation and a proven track record when it comes to the organising and hosting of major international events and conferences, according to CTICC chair Gary Fisher.
She holds a Master’s Degree in Town and Regional Planning from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and a Bachelor of Development Administration Degree, majoring in economics.
She has fulfilled the role of CEO of the Durban International Convention Centre (ICC) for the past three years, where she was instrumental in transforming the centre into a profitable business entity.
Ellingson joined the Durban ICC from the eThekwini Municipality’s Strategic Projects Unit.
As head of the Strategic Projects Unit, she was responsible for driving Durban’s 2010 and Beyond Programme and delivering on the city’s 2010 FIFA World Cup responsibilities.
Under Ellingson’s leadership over R6bn was invested in projects across the city.
The most notable include the Moses Mabhida Stadium, the upgrade of Durban’s central beachfront, the development of sports hubs (Umlazi, Clermont and KwaMashu), city beautification, people mover bus service and phase 1 of the Victoria Embankment Yacht Mole.
Ellingson also serves as the chair of the Global Alliance of Congress Centres.
* This week the CTICC has also launched its new sustainable menu at its on-site coffee shop, Coffee on the Square.
According to the general manager for operations, Aage Hansen, the new menu, which has been designed according to international cuisine standards, encompasses a fully sustainable food offering.
“Every item on the menu has been exclusively crafted by our executive chef Warwick Thomas to reduce the centre's food footprint in order to contribute to a sustainable industry. All ingredients are therefore sourced within a 40 km radius”, said Hansen.
