IT'S probably not a coincidence that Air Seychelles’ strong increases in profitability and passenger numbers follows Etihad Airways' purchase of a 40% stake in the airline in February 2012. The partial privatisation of the airline is working.
Air Seychelles has reported a 42% increase in passenger numbers in the third quarter of 2013, compared to the third quarter of 2012.
Growth was largest on its international routes and in particular on flights to Mauritius (39% increase) and flights to Abu Dhabi (147% increase). There was also a 12% rise in passengers on the Johannesburg-Seychelles flight route.
The increase on the Abu Dhabi route indicates the extent to which Air Seychelles’ partnership with Etihad is paying off.
Air Seychelles has integrated its frequent flyer programme with Etihad, and synchronised its flights with Etihad Airways’ flight arrival times into the Seychelles.
Ultimately, it’s not passenger numbers which count for an airline so much as profitability, and here too Air Seychelles reports that it is well on its way to a second year of profitability: “With our continuing focus on containing costs, we are confident we will deliver a strong financial return to our shareholders and to our home economy,” said its CEO Cramer Ball.
“It is a pleasure to see these results which show that we are solidly on track for a second year of profitability, confirming that our business plan was soundly constructed. With continued focus, it is certain that Air Seychelles will continue to deliver strongly.
"Considering our convenient schedule and connections, we offer a powerful proposition to the traveling public, which will continue to contribute to the record number of tourists visiting our islands,” said Seychelles Minister for Home Affairs and Transport Jöel Morgan. (The Seychelles government retains a 60% ownership of Air Seychelles).
