Mini craze as Checkers, PnP pull out stops to lure shoppers

Cape Town - South African retailers Checkers, Pick n Pay and Spar are upping their game even more to lure customers - big and small - to their stores.

The Checkers promotion, which aims to reward loyal shoppers and give children an opportunity to learn about entrepreneurship, seems to be a hit among adults who are openly challenging each other on social media to see who will be first to collect all 29 mini replicas of actual products.

"Some of South Africa’s most iconic and trusted brands were chosen because of their popularity with customers. The 29 minis were created to the specific requirements of the brands represented, so each mini is an exact replica of these brands - including All Gold Tomato Sauce, Flora Margarine and Omo Washing Powder," a Shoprite Checkers spokesperson told Fin24.

The Checkers Little Shop campaign - a collaborative promotion between Checkers and some of its key suppliers launched a week ago.

"Checkers Little Shop is a fun way of rewarding our loyal customers as well as celebrating the brands that have become part of our everyday lives. It is all about fun for the whole family."

Shoppers are rewarded with a free Little Shop mini for every R150 spent in-store.

The campaign also aims at giving children an opportunity to learn about entrepreneurship, the spokesperson emphasised.

"We believe that the education and play development nature of Little Shop can be beneficial for kids’ learning."

However, it seems as though both children and adults alike are responding positively to the Checkers Little Shop mini collectables.

"From the many social media posts about Checkers Little Shop, customers across the board seem to be having fun with the minis, which they think are unique and exciting," the spokesperson said.

"We have also had a number of requests from school teachers for Checkers Little Shop minis as they are keen to use them in their math’s and entrepreneurship lessons."

As for Pick n Pay, it has followed up its Stikeez campaign with a Super Animals campaign launched on Monday.

“Our customers loved Stikeez and we have been looking for another fun campaign to run that would appeal to our shoppers. We think we have found one in Super Animals," said Pick n Pay customer and trade executive John Bradshaw.

For every R150 spent at any Pick n Pay, you will get a free pack of four collectible Super Animal cards that can be scanned, using Pick n Pay’s free app, to "bring the animal on the card to life".

There are 108 cards to collect in nine categories. Each card has a barcode that can be read by a Sound Card Reader, available at Pick n Pay for R50.

"We know from Stikeez that most of our rewards going to people already shop with PnP. But we do hope other people will come to our stores, and see the improvements we have been making and the great value we offer,” said Bradshaw.
