Young voters flock to Wimpy for free coffee

Cape Town - Wimpy is offering a free cup of coffee to every person who comes in on voting day with an inked thumb and it is mostly the youth taking up the offer at a store in Cape Town.

“The Wimpy Cups 4 Votes is a special way of bringing the people of South Africa together," said Wimpy marketing executive Charmaine Ellis.

It is the twentieth year since the dawn of democracy in South Africa and voters are casting their ballots in the country's fifth democratic elections.

Ellis said the initiative is the restaurant outlet's way of celebrating this significant milestone.

Wimpy held the same campaign during the last elections that took place in 2009.

"We received positive feedback from consumers and we knew that it was something we could build on for upcoming elections," Ellis told Fin24.

Everson Gengezha, who is the manager at Wimpy in St Georges Mall in Cape Town, said the campaign is good business.

"So far we are doing very well. We had a huge influx of customers," he told Fin24.

"At one stage we had about 20 youngsters here."

He said there is a lot of excitement by customers and that has improved sales especially since the restaurant is usually quiet on a public holiday.
