Mall architects, developers awarded

Durban – A number of architects, developers and designers were honoured for shopping centre design excellence at the 19th congress of the SA Council of Shopping Centres (SACSC) taking place in Durban this week.

In the category for super or regional malls and shopping centres – in other words those bigger than 20 000 square metres – the winner was the Matlosana Mall in Klerksdorp in the North West Province.

The architect was SVA International and the developer Redefine Properties.

The other finalists were Newtown Junction and the Forest Hill City Mall, both in Gauteng.

In the category for neighbourhood and convenience centres – in other words those less than 20 000 square metres – the winner was Waterfall Corner in Gauteng. The architect was Bentel Associates International and the developer Atterbury.

In the category for renovation and expansion of existing centres there were two winners. The one was The Watershed in the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town with Wolff Architects as the architect and V&A Waterfront Holdings as the developer.

The other joint winner in this category was the Rosebank Mall in Johannesburg with architect MDS Architecture and Hyprop Investment  as the developer.

The other finalists in this category were the Cresta Shopping Centre in Randburg and The Point  in Sea Point, Cape Town.

In the category for restaurant design the winner was Nandos in the Maponya Mall in Soweto. Nandos is both the designer (in collaboration with Design Partnership) and the owner of the restaurant.

The other finalists were Nandos in the Blue Hills Shopping Centre in Midrand and Rocomamas in the Pineslopes Shopping Centre in Fairways, Johannesburg.

In the category for store design, there were two joint winners. The one is Cotton On in the Gateway Theatre of Shopping in Durban and the other Relay Jeans in the Westgate Shopping Centre in Roodepoort. Cotton On is both the designer and owner of its store, while TDC and Co. did the design of the Relay Jeans store for TFG, Markham.

The other finalist was Anatomy in Juta Street in Johannesburg.

In the category for international shopping centres (with SA links) the winner was the Delta Mall in Effurun in Nigeria. The architect is LYT Architecture and Resilient Africa/Baysol Development the developer.

The other finalists were the Pacific Mall in India and the West Hills Mall in Ghana.

The Spectrum Award for retail excellence was awarded to Waterfall Corner in Gauteng.
