KFC oil spill causes JHB road chaos

KFC oil spill causes JHB road chaos

2015-02-13 14:46

Cape Town – KFC staff allegedly poured 25 litres of cooking oil at their drive-through in Southdale, Johannesburg on Thursday, which resulted in an accident involving five cars.

Kishen Pillay was injured as a result of the accident and now plans to seek legal action against the fast-food outlet.

Pillay said his car’s brakes locked after hitting the patch of oil on the busy road, as did four other cars, which resulted in them sliding into each other at the stop street.

A string of poor decisions resulted in the oil spreading on to the main road, as the staff first spilt oil on their driveway and then used water and washing liquid to wash the oil off their road and onto the main road.

“[KFC] said they are going to be paying for damages, … but I am looking to take them up,” he said. “It was just negligence from their side. How could you be so foolish for someone to wash oil on to the main road.”

KFC investigating incident

Gail Sham, corporate communications manager of KFC South Africa, said the safety of KFC’s customers was of the utmost importance to the company.

“We take the incident at KFC Southdale very seriously and we are in the process of conducting a thorough investigation into this case,” she told Fin24.

“It is important to point out that ‘dumping’ is [in] contravention of our strict processes,” she explained. “While this investigation is underway, we have taken the appropriate measures to clean up the spillage and ensure that there is no additional risk to our customers or staff.”

What they should have done

A website called how to clean stuff gave this handy tip for cleaning up cooking oil: “As the saying goes, ‘oil and water don’t mix.’ So when the bottle of cooking oil spills all over the kitchen floor, reaching for the mop probably isn’t the best idea.”

They advised the spiller to cover the oil with an absorbent material such as corn starch or sand, allow the absorbent material to soak up the oil for about 10-15 minutes and then use paper towels to scoop the material into a dustpan.

It was no KFC employees. It was drool from a bunch of ANC leaders lining up to buy chicken, and paying for it with your and my money.

  • Allan Brits - 2015-02-13 18:10

No oil to deep fry so the KFC will have to be grilled and the cANCer will now have to diet and slim down ...I can just hear the passage grumblings

  • Allan Brits - 2015-02-13 18:15

Its a real wonder that the blacks eat so much of kfc as Saunders is white so JvR is out of the picture

  • Michael Kelynack - 2015-02-13 18:58

JvR is never out of the picture. Let me explain...JvR came here...and because of that buildings, tar roads, cars and oil came to south africa...therefore being JvR's fault. So in order to fix this all of JvR's decendants and "same type" should break down everything that was due to JvR and move back to their 1st world countries where there is constant electricity, low murders, low crime rates and governments that actually care about their people regardless of their race.

KFC is dirty. Their staff is dirty. Their food is wack. Health authorities shud wade into dis and do a thorough inspection of KFC's compliance to food safety standards.

  • Sizo Manoko - 2015-02-14 04:04

now that jobs have been created we need to move to stage 2, what am i being paid to do? and what is the impact of what i do? if we deal with these 2 questions, the KFC incidents would not happen. and if it does happen, someone would know that you do not clean oil spill by water

  • Clint Griffin - 2015-02-14 08:04

This poses more questions, if KFC staff see fit to pour/spill wash oil from their premises, how do they usually deal with old oil? It sounds like they may not dispose of it safely, which is an environmental issue, besides the revolting food.

I bet the KFC have not got a written procedure as to how to handle such an accident. Fine them a couple of million as other companies are for these type of actions and it will at least save us poor taxpayers a few Rand!

  • Robert Sehannie - 2015-02-15 00:12

I notice that KFC are admirably concerned for the safety of their customers and staff. But the hell with road users outside of their premises.

  • John Jones - 2015-02-15 15:10

No matter processes are in place, you can't take the township out the person. Disgusting that KFC don't fire these people for the potential death that may be caused.
