Johannesburg - Astral Foods [JSE:ARL] has appointed Dr Theuns Eloff as chair of its board.
This follows the announcement on March 27 2014 of the retirement of Jurie Geldenhuys as chair of the board of Astral Foods.
Eloff (59) will start as new chair with effect from June 1 2014. Until recently he was the vice-chancellor of North- West University.
He had completed his studies at Potchefstroom University (now North-West University), started his career as a minister of religion in Pretoria and left the ministry in 1989 to join the Consultative Business Movement (CBM), where he was appointed as Executive Director in 1990.
During his time with CBM he was seconded to both Codesa (1991-2) as head of process and secretariat services, and the multi-party negotiations process (1993) where he was head of administration, until the negotiated Interim Constitution was adopted.
In 1995 Eloff was appointed as chief executive of the National Business Initiative. He served on the Economic Advisory Council of the North-West Province, the board of Business Against Crime and the board of the Centre for Conflict Resolution.
In 2002 he became vice-chancellor of the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education. In 2004 he was appointed as the vice-chancellor of the newly merged North-West University.
He is past deputy chair and chair of Higher Education South Africa (Hesa) and the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU).
He also served as vice- president and president of the Afrikaanse Handelsinstituut (AHI) from 2009 to 2012. Eloff has been an independent non-executive director on the board of Astral Foods since May 2007.
He is also the chair of the Dagbreek Trust, deputy chair of the FW de Klerk Foundation, and will join the board of Open Learning Holdings on July 1.
