Cape Town - A private castle, which was allegedly described by late President Nelson Mandela as "an exquisite piece of heaven" will go on auction in February.

Pezula Castle on Noetzie beach near Knysna on the Garden Route will go on auction in February.

Madiba and his wife Graca Machel apparently once stayed at the castle for a 10-day retreat.

The auction of the castle will be part of High Street Auctions' first sale of 2018.

The property, situated along a stretch of secluded beach, actually consists of three castles offering a total of five luxury suites. It is situated in its own private garden.

The residence provides such comforts as a heated rim-flow pool, huge terraces with panoramic views of the ocean and a gymnasium.

Cliff Castle, set against the rock face above Pezula Castle, also offers panoramic views of the beach and ocean. It offers private accommodation for a couple and has a luxury en-suite bedroom and an adjoining open-plan living area that comprises a kitchenette and seating space.

According to Joff van Reenen, lead auctioneer at High Street, the castles form part of the exclusive Pezula resort. The resort also consists of the Conrad Pezula Hotel, the Pezula Spa and Gym and the Championship Pezula Golf Course.

About seven years ago the castle was sold for more than R35m, according to Van Reenen.
