Johannesburg - Diamond producer De Beers Group announced that Barend Petersen would take over from Nicky Oppenheimer as executive chairperson of the company's South African mining operation De Beers Consolidated Mines (DBCM).
Oppenheimer, who served as chair for 12 years, will continue to sit on the Board of DBCM and serve as chair of the wider De Beers Group.
"As executive chairman of DBCM, Mr Petersen assumes the company's most senior role and will represent the De Beers Family of Companies in South Africa.
"He will focus on the strategic positioning and growth of DBCM and will continue building on the De Beers Family of Companies' already positive relationships with its shareholders, the government of South Africa, and other stakeholders."
De Beers said Petersen, a director of DBCM since 2002, was a chartered accountant with broad global business experience, and was a director of several companies - including being a non-executive director of Anglo American South Africa, De Beers Société Anonyme in Luxembourg and a director and shareholder of Ponahalo Holdings, the South African broad-based black empowerment company that holds a 26 percent equity interest in DBCM.
Prior to Thursday's appointment, Petersen had been serving as the acting-CEO of DBCM.
"De Beers therefore announces that Philip Barton, DBCM Finance Director, will become CEO of DBCM."
The group said Barton had worked for De Beers for more than 20 years, "gathering a wealth of operational experience across a number of mining operations and business functions."
