Miner dies in KZN mine

Cape Town - Harmony Gold [JSE:HAR] mining company has reported a fatality at it's Kusasalethu mine on Monday.

It said in a statement that an employee was fatally injured in the early hours of the morning in a fall of ground accident at its Kusasalethu mine, which is Harmony’s deepest mine.

"Investigations into the accident are underway and management has stopped mining activities on the level where the accident occurred. Harmony's management team wish to express their deepest condolences to the members of the deceased's family," it said.

Harmony shares traded 3.91% higher at R58.66 in post-lunchtime trade on Monday.

Kusasalethu is situated in the West Witwatersrand Basin and mines the Ventersdorp Contact Reef as its main ore body.

The mine comprises twin vertical and twin sub-vertical shaft systems and uses conventional mining methods in a sequential grid layout.

Mining is conducted at a depth of 3 388 metres, making it Harmony’s deepest mine. Ore mined is treated at the Kusasalethu plant.
