Cape Town - Harmony [JSE:HAR] Gold mine reported on Tuesday that a rock drill operator was fatally injured in a fall of ground accident at its Phakisa mine near Welkom on Monday afternoon.
"We are deeply saddened by another fall of ground accident. My condolences go to the family and friends of the deceased," said Harmony's chief executive officer Peter Steenkamp.
Drilling and blasting operations at the mine have been stopped while further investigations into the accident are taking place.
Harmony Gold's Kusasalethu mine also stopped mining activities on Monday after an employee was fatally injured in a fall.
"Investigations into the accident are underway and management has stopped mining activities on the level where the accident occurred. Harmony's management team wish to express their deepest condolences to the members of the deceased's family," it said in a statement.
