Cape Town - The Elandsfontein phosphate mine, which is currently under construction, has suffered an act of sabotage, it announced on Thursday.
It was discovered on Wednesday that unauthorised individuals gained access to a restricted construction area and severed cables to certain equipment.
"The incident has resulted in a minor delay in the construction process. Fortunately no injuries were sustained."
A a criminal investigation has been instituted after Elandsfontein laid a charge with the SAPS in Hopefield.
"The company is offering a R25 000 cash reward for information leading to the conviction of either the perpetrators or the organisers."
A dedicated 24 hour hotline for information has been set up. The number is 076 0255 388 for calls and WhatsApp messages.
Phosphate, a known as a strategic mineral, is a naturally occurring mineral containing the element phosphorus. The agricultural sector in particular requires fertilizers, which contain phosphates, which are essential for food production.
