Johannesburg - There should be no tension between unions fighting for the rights of workers in the mining sector, the National Council of Trade Unions (Nactu) said on Monday.
"The two unions are looking for improving the working conditions of people working in the mines...that is the bottom line.
"The tension should be between the workers and employers, not between unions," said Nactu president Joseph Maqhekeni.
"If there are differences, let's manage them.
"There should be no tensions because there is one agenda."
Maqhekeni was speaking ahead of a meeting between Nactu and its affiliate the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu), and the Congress of SA Trade Unions and its affiliate the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM).
Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant called the meeting.
Rivalry between Amcu and NUM has created labour instability in the mining sector, especially at platinum mines.
