Long wait for Amplats miners almost over

Johannesburg - Talks on retrenching about 14 000 workers at Anglo Platinum [JSE:AMS] are likely to be concluded early next month, the mine said on Tuesday.

"The parties are still in the process of concluding the details of the consultation and its outcome will be communicated during the week commencing May 6," spokesperson Mpumi Sithole said.

Amplats announced in January that because of proposed changes to the business, up to 14 000 jobs could be affected, 13 000 of which would be in the Rustenburg area.

The mineral resources department, Amplats, and unions met and decided to postpone the section 189 process under the Labour Relations Act.

The section stipulates how a retrenchment process must be undertaken. This includes talks with unions and legal requirements for fair dismissals for operational requirements.

In January the parties announced the consultation process would not take longer than 60 days and be concluded by April 30.

The unions represented at Amplats are the National Union of Mineworkers, the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union, the National Union of Metalworkers of SA, and the United Association of SA.
