Johannesburg - Wage talks between unions and gold producers resumed at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration on Tuesday, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said.
"As NUM we hope for the best," said union spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka.
Last month, the unions Solidarity, the NUM and UASA declared a dispute with the Chamber of Mines, which represents the gold producers.
The NUM wanted surface workers to earn a minimum of R7 000 a month, and underground and open-cast workers R8 000 a month.
UASA and Solidarity have demanded increases of 18% and 10% respectively.
The gold producers have tabled a 5% offer.
Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) treasurer Jimmy Gama said his union was part of the negotiations.
"We were invited to take part in the negotiations. We will rather wait for the final outcome before we can say anything further," he said.
Amcu has asked for a 150% increase for entry-level underground workers.
Seshoka said the talks might take days before an agreement was concluded.
